Are You In a Food Rut?

Are You In a Food Rut?

I don't know about you but sometimes I find myself making the same old recipes week after week.

Boring!!

For some strange reason I found myself avoiding certain fresh veggies.

I came to realize this one day when I was standing in front of the fresh produce cooler at the supermarket. I was looking at the same old veggies, that I always buy, trying to think of something different to make with them.

It then occurred to me that there are lots of other vegetables that I had been overlooking and had either never or seldom eaten.  Fennel, for instance, which I had always avoided because I didn't think I would like it. Someone once told me it tasted like licorice and I don't care for licorice...now doesn't that sound like a child.

There is a fennel salad recipe in one of my cookbooks that I had looked at numerous times, so I decided to give it a try.  I remembered that the recipe called for jicama, which the grocery department did not have.   So I substituted purple cabbage, not only for the crunch but for the colour.  I headed home with the fennel, red cabbage and some navel oranges.

I felt excited, I wasn't bored anymore, in fact I was delighted to try something new.

The salad was so delicious I could not stop eating it and it has become one of my favourites.  In fact, I have come to really enjoy the light delicate taste of fennel..who knew?

After that experience I have decided to try a new vegetable, or at least a new way of making them, every week.

This week I am sharing the Fennel & Orange Salad recipe that I adapted.  As I try other vegetables I will share the delicious recipes in future posts.

How about you?  Do you get excited to try new things? There are so many delicious vegetables just waiting for you to pick them up and give them a try.

Adding an extra servings of vegetables to your diet each day can give you tremendous health benefits and is one of the easiest and best things to do to improve your health.

If you have a similar story of trying something new and being delighted with the results please tell us about it in the comments below.
